MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. –Central Michigan defeated Southern Indiana for the second time this year as it registered a 5-1 victory over the Screaming Eagles Tuesday in Madeira Beach, Fla. With the win, CMU moves to 7-8 on the season, while USI falls to 4-9 in their first season as an NCAA Division I program.
CMU went up 1-0 in the first when Caiitlyn Britton grounded out with a hard hit back to the pitcher and Michaleigh Vallimont crossed home plate.
Vallimont and Skylar Coberley both hit home runs in the third inning as CMU went up 3-1. The two Chippewa home runs broke a 1-1 tie after a single scored Southern Indiana's Bedrick from second base.
"Mac going out and hitting that home run was huge for us because it really crushed any potential that USI had to gain momentum." Central Michigan Head Coach McCall Salmon said.
In the fourth inning, Vallimont recorded another hit, an RBI single that scored Peighton Root from second base and Abbey Tolmie scored on a wild pitch. After the fourth inning, Central Michigan led 5-1.
Madelyn Wallace earned the win in the circle after pitching five innings, while Faith Howe cleaned things up for the final six outs. Wallace surrendered only four hits and allowed just one run. Howe allowed only one hit.
"Wally did a great job," Salmon said. "The USI hitters only saw her maybe twice in the first game since it was a five-inning game. Every time she has stepped into the circle this season, she has grown in confidence, and we see that every time she goes out there. Getting her comfortable and gaining confidence as a starter and someone who can keep us in games is huge to our success. She has really shined in that role in the first three weeks of the season."
The Central Michigan Chippewas were able to get the first batter of all seven innings out to start each inning.
"Anytime you can keep the leadoff batter from the bases every inning, you give yourself a great chance to win. I think Wally and Faith did a great job and let the defense behind them play Chippewa softball."
Next up, the Chippewas take on Army in a true doubleheader beginning at noon on Wednesday, March 8 as they close out the trip to Florida.
"The doubleheader tomorrow is another great opportunity for us to prepare for MAC play," Salmon said. "Getting to see a team twice in a row for 14 innings will be a test, but we are excited for the opportunity to compete again as a team."
