TOLEDO, Ohio – The Central Michigan softball team finished the trip to Toledo with a sweep of the Rockets on the second day of competition. The Chippewas defeated the Rockets 3-2 in the first game of the doubleheader and were again victorious 1-0 in the nightcap. Central Michigan moves to 18-19 overall and 8-6 in MAC play.
In game one, Kaitlyn Bean threw a complete seven innings allowing six hits and only two runs. Bean moves to 7-6 on the season.
Offensively for the Chippewas, Emily Bracamonte led the charge with a two-run homerun in the top of the second inning which gave CMU the 2-1 advantage. In the top of the fifth, Allyssa Hollo hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield and Cierra Laska scored making it 3-1 Chippewas. Toledo scored their final run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Jessica Bracamonte, the sister of Chippewa infielder, Emily Bracamonte is in her first season as the head coach at Toledo. Central Michigan Head Coach, McCall Salmon said "Overall, it was a great series for Emily at the plate. Any time we can have the bottom of our order not only produce offensively but turn the page to the top of the order is huge and Emily was a key part of that today. The timing of the homerun was also huge, after they (Toledo) went up a run in the bottom of the first, really allowed us to gain momentum and keep it for the rest of the day."
Game two was a pitcher dual and Grace Lehto went the distance for the Chippewas. Grabbing her seventh victory of the year, Lehto allowed only two hits and struck out six. "Every time you are given the ball in the circle, the expectation is for you to give us to opportunity to win the game. There is no doubt that Grace and Kaitlyn gave us the chance to do that today."
In the top of the second inning, the Chippewas scratched across a run and that was all it took to grab the win on the day. Abbey Tolmie singled up the middle and Bracamonte scored to tip the scale 1-0 in favor of the Maroon and Gold.
The series win over Toledo marks the Chippewas fourth straight series win in the Mid-American Conference. "I think from a team perspective provides confidence, bouncing back and taking another series. Every one that we take is huge in the conference."
