Chippewas return to Mid-American Conference play this weekend with three-game set at Akron
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Cole Prout homered and five Central Michigan pitchers struck out a combined 10 on Wednesday as the Chippewas ran their win streak to six games with a 10-2 nonconference victory over Madonna at Keilitz Field at Theunissen Stadium.
The Chippewas (23-13), who have won 10 of their last 11 games, open a three-game Mid-American Conference at Akron on Friday (3 p.m.).
CMU has won five of its last six league games and is 10-5 in conference play, tied for third place with Ball State, two games behind first-place Kent State.
Akron is 14-22, 6-12. The Zips snapped a five-game losing streak with a 14-10 nonconference victory over Eastern Michigan on Tuesday.
Prout, a freshman batting leadoff for just the third time this season, also doubled, walked twice, and scored four runs in leading the Chippewas at the plate on Wednesday.
Justin Simpson and Jake Brill also had two hits apiece for the Chippewas, who led 5-2 and then exploded for five runs in the seventh inning.
Prout led off the inning with his second career homer. Drew Stengren later delivered a two-run single.
Keegan Batka started on the mound for CMU and Ben Vitas, Evan Waters, Jack Bach and Ryan Palmblad each pitched in relief.
Vitas (1-1), a junior right-hander, went three innings for the victory.
The quintet held Madonna to seven hits and walked just two.
