Softball Sweeps for Second Straight Weekend
4/22/2023 3:37:00 PM | Softball
The game felt like a rollercoaster as the teams battled rain and each other at Medaille College. Play was suspended three times due to rain, but for no longer than 10 minutes at a time. This worked in favor of the Chippewas as they scored their nine runs in four of the seven innings.
To start the game, Buffalo jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two full innings, but that was the final time they would lead when the Chippewas scored one in the third and two in the fourth to tie it at three.
In the third, Maddie Springer scored on a pass ball after she reached base on a double and advanced on a fielder's choice hit by Abbey Tolmie. In the two-run fourth, the Chippewas scored their runs when Emily Bracamonte reached. Cierra Laska entered to pinch run, was moved to second by a Lucy Cronin sacrifice bunt and Laska scored when Springer collected an RBI with a single through the left side.
The Chippewas added two more runs in the sixth when Samantha Mills singled through the left side and drove in both Cronin and Bracamonte. The two runs broke a 3-3 tie, gave Central Michigan its first lead at 5-3 at the end of the sixth inning.
The Chippewas weren't finished as they scored four more runs in the top of the seventh to bring their total to nine. The runs came from an Allyssa Hollo RBI single, a Skylar Coberley two-run home run, and a Cronin RBI single.
In the bottom of the sixth, Buffalo hit a home run and then in the seventh, scored three more to total a 9-7 Chippewa victory.
Grace Lehto went the distance again for the Chippewas as the complete game marked her 13th of the season, ninth in 2023 MAC play, and 70th as a Chippewa in her three seasons. Lehto struck out eight in seven innings.
Next up, Central Michigan will host Bowling Green who is 1-17 in the Mid-American Conference this season. The Chippewas and Flacons will face off on Tuesday, April 25 for Staff and Faculty Appreciation Day (3 p.m.) and play a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 26 beginning at 1 p.m.
