CMU opens busy split weekend with a top-five trio in 400-meter hurdles and came inches from the meet record in the long jump
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Central Michigan University Track & Field opened this weekend's Clark Woods Invitational at University of Louisville on the right foot Friday night.
The Chippewas claimed another 400-meter hurdles victory through Olivia Hankey's 1:01.69 while Hayley Manners set a new personal-best of 6.28 meters in the long jump, less than an inch from CMU's No. 2 slot in the program's top-ten listing.
While two seconds from her personal-best in the event, Hankey defeated Kent State University's Alexandria Verbancic by nearly a second as the representative of the Golden Flashes broke up what would have been a 1-2-3 finish for CMU, with Emma Francis—last week's 400 hurdles winner at NCAA II Grand Valley State University—in third, Annie Laurenz in fourth.
The long jump posted a pair of top-ten marks led by Hankey's second-place leap, which fell just 0.01 meters from the meet record ahead of Friday's competition, 0.03 meters from the event's winner. Sarah Daniel posted a 5.87-meter personal-best of her own, which puts her on the doorstep of the program's top-ten list, which starts at 5.88 meters.
Mohogany Wells collected a fifth Central Michigan top-five Friday with a 54.49-meter heave of the hammer, ahead of Aliyah Boeve who notched the 10th spot in throws of both the hammer and discus on the day. Boeve's bid for the discus final came just 0.03 meters short.
Peyton Korytkowski rounded out the Chippewas with top-ten finishes as 25.12 seconds was good for ninth in the 200 meters.
Central Michigan Track & Field has more on tap at the Clark Woods Invitational tomorrow, while another delegation for the Chippewas will make a return visit to Allendale, Mich. for Grand Valley's Extra-Weekend Meet.
