Lacrosse Topped by Robert Morris 12-11 in Overtime

Chippewas will enter the MAC Tournament next week as the No. 3 seed and will play Kent State on Thursday at 4 p.m. at Robert Morris; Audrey Whiteside and Kelly Hoyt each score three goals in Chippewas’ regular season finale.
MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa.—Audrey Whiteside and Kelly Hoyt scored three goals apiece but it was not enough as Robert Morris scored the game's final three goals and Colleen Tifft registered the game's winning goal in overtime for a 12-11 decision Saturday at Joe Walton Stadium.
Central Michigan will enter the 2023 Mid-American Conference Tournament as the No. 3 seed and will face Kent State in the first round on Thursday, May 4 at 4 p.m. No. 1 seed Robert Morris will play Youngstown State on Thursday, May 4 at 1 p.m. The winners will face off in the MAC Championship on Saturday, May 6 at 3 p.m. The tournament will be played at Robert Morris' Joe Walton Stadium in Moon Township, Pa.
Central Michigan concludes its regular season with an 8-8 overall record and 6-2 MAC record. Robert Morris improves to 9-8 overall and 7-1 in the MAC.
Central Michigan held an 11-9 lead with an unassisted goal by Kendall Hoyt with 6:35 to play. But Robert Morris answered a minute later when Tifft cut the lead to 11-10 on an unassisted goal. Then RMU's Julia Koterwas tied the game at 11-11 after receiving a pass from Lilli Hadden.
Both teams had opportunities in the final four minutes of regulation but neither team could find the net and the game went into overtime.
Robert Morris won the draw control at the start of the overtime period and scored the golden goal 53 seconds later when Tifft took a pass from Chelsea Coleman and finished off a shot.
Leading Central Michigan was Whiteside and Kelly Hoyt, who both finished with three goals apiece, Hinkle scored two goals, Kendall Hoyt added a goal and an assist, and Angela Hilderbrandt registered two assists. Alexa Martel made 12 saves in goal for the Chippewas.
Central Michigan jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter. Sadie Hinkle scored on an unassisted goal. Hilderbrandt found Maggie Diebold for a 2-0 lead at the 10:10 mark, Hinkle followed with another unassisted score, and Reagan Martinsen found the net with just four seconds left in the first quarter for the Chippewa's 4-0 lead.
After three straight goals by Whiteside and two from Kelly Hoyt, the Chippewas held an 8-2 lead with 3:38 to play in the first half, but Robert Morris gained the momentum heading into halftime with a goal at the 1:17 mark by Colleen Tifft. It was the first of four consecutive goals scored by the Colonials, who cut the margin to 8-6.
Whiteside scored her second goal to maintain a 9-6 lead for CMU, but Robert Morris pulled closer with back-to-back goals by Jenna Irwin and Lili Hadden to cut the margin to 9-8 in the fourth quarter. Whiteside's third goal made it 10-8 CMU but RMU answered back with a score by Jenna Irwin with 8:11 to play.
