Two points-paying performances, three successful trial runs on MAC Championships Day One
AKRON, Ohio — Central Michigan University Track & Field collected a pair of sixth-place finishes to sit eighth after the opening day of the 2023 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the University of Akron's Lee R. Jackson Complex.
Â
The three-day event opened Thursday morning with a high-noon pole vault, which led to the first points for the Chippewas. Shelby Korytkowski wasted no effort clearing the first two bars of the day, working into a new personal-best of 3.56 meters—a six-inch improvement from last year's outdoor league championship.
Â
Olivia Hankey was CMU's other point scorer on a day littered with trial events. Just minutes after logging the second-fastest qualifying run in the 400-meter hurdles, Hankey posted a personal-best 37.46-meter fling of the javelin that matched Korytkowski's sixth-place output.
Â
Anya Turner opened the successful qualifying portion of the evening, pacing her way to a 4:35.94 in the 1,500 meters—good for fourth overall. Hankey's runner-up trial run over the hurdles came with a plus-one as Emma Francis legged out a 1:01.50 in the third heat just after Hankey's 1:00.36.
Â
The heavy artillery will take flight to open day two of the 2023 MAC Championships Friday with the hammer throw kickstarting the day's events at 10:00 a.m. Mohogany Wells is seeded fourth in the event, along with eighth in the 2:00 p.m. shot put.
