CMU sends 25 athletes to the University of Akron for the three-day outdoor championship event beginning Thursday
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Central Michigan University Track & Field will take on the 2023 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships this week, hosted by the University of Akron at the Lee R. Jackson Track & Field Complex.
Â
The Chippewas have at least one competitor seeded to score in 12 different events throughout the three-day event, led by Hayley Manners as the top-seeded long jumper after posting a 6.28-meter leap at the Clark Wood Open at the University of Louisville late last month, a mark that remains 34th nationally in the event ahead of conference championship weekend.
Â
Friday's long jump will be one of many scoring opportunities for CMU: the steeplechase comes with high expectations as Emily Paupore and Anya Turner enter as the second and third seeds in the event as both have risen in the program's all-time top-ten list in recent weeks. Paupore's 10:25.73 from Grand Valley State University's Extra-Weekend Meet sits just-over five seconds from the school record while Turner sits sixth all-time.
Â
Olivia Hankey is in position to score twice for the Chippewas Thursday night, seeded fifth in the 400-meter hurdles and sixth in javelin. Hankey has remained in her tie for third all-time in CMU history with her 59.69-second run in the 400 hurdles at last year's MAC Championships.
Â
Friday's scoring potential spills to the throwing pits as well with Mohogany Wells seeded fourth in the hammer throw and eighth in shot put. The MAC Championships have been kind to Wells in her career as her personal-record of 56.05 meters—ranking seventh all-time for the Chippewas—came in last year's conference meet.
Â
A pair of top-five all-time performers await Saturday's action as Paupore returns to take on the 5,000 meters as CMU's fifth all-time in the event while Angelina Horn enters the triple jump fourth all-time for the Chippewas. Both top-five marks were set on the same weekend in late March, though they occurred over 600 miles away from each other: Horn's 12.23-meter output came at the University of Central Florida's Knights Invitational while Paupore's 16:40.71 was logged at North Carolina State University's Raleigh Relays.
