5/12/2023 11:06:00 PM | Softball
OXFORD, Ohio – Central Michigan Softball closed the chapter on an amazing season in its third game of the Mid-American Conference Tournament. The Chippewas defeated and eliminated No. 4 seed Ball State in the first game of the day, 4-1, but later fall to No. 2 seed Ohio in the nightcap, 7-2.
CMU ends its season with a 29-26 overall record, 18-11 in the MAC, and with the highlight of reaching the conference tournament for a second straight year. The Chippewas also posted an 11-game win streak, three complete series sweeps, and won seven of their 10 conference series.
The program graduates five seniors: Kaitlyn Bean, Samantha Mills, Kelsey Alexander, Emily Bracamonte and Peighton Root. The graduating class departs with a 104-121 record and a total 759 appearances by the class.
Game 1: Central Michigan 4, Ball State 1
Central Michigan and its bats showed early as the Chippewas jumped out to 3-0 lead in the first inning. The three runs came in when Allyssa Hollo cleared the bases on a three RBI double. Abbey Tolmie started the game with a single, Michaleigh Vallimont walked, and Kelsey Alexander was hit by a pitch to load the bases. The Hollo double would account for three of the four runs scored as the Chippewas avoided elimination.
The final run for CMU came when Tolmie singled and Maddie Springer crossed home on a throwing error. Springer reached base from a full count walk. That run came in the second and would be it for Chippewa scoring in game one.
Ball State scored its lone run in the fifth inning with an RBI double.
Graduate Student Kaitlyn Bean final complete game as a Chippewa as she went the distance through seven innings. Bean struck out six, allowed only one walk and six hits. She ended her CMU career with 359 strikeouts, 472 innings pitched and a 32-39 record.
Game 2: Ohio 7, Central Michigan 2
Ohio used a four-run sixth inning to cap off its 7-2 win over the Chippewas. The loss eliminated Central Michigan from the Mid-American Conference Tournament as the back-and-forth game would be the deciding factor in the length of the Chippewas season.
Ohio posted its first run in the first inning, scoring on a single to right field.
In the top of the third inning, Allyssa Hollo showed up again for the Chippewas as she smashed a ball over the straight-away center field fence for a two-run home run. Kelsey Alexander, who singled on the first pitch of her at bat, would also cross home to give CMU the 2-1 advantage.
That home run would be the only two runs for the Chippewas. The Bobcats added a run in the fifth inning when a called out on the field was overturned on an obstruction call by the Chippewas' catcher.
In the sixth inning, four hits scored four runs for the Bobcats and would bring the score to 7-2 favoring Ohio.
Junior pitcher Grace Lehto took the loss for the Chippewas, ending her season with a 14-16 record. Bean entered in relief in the bottom of the sixth and was then relieved by Madelyn Wallace who faced the final three outs.
