LaPoint’s Return Aids in Scoreless Draw in Chippewas’ Home-Opener

Shelved since the 2021 campaign, CMU’s veteran keeper offers clean 90 minutes while the offense continues to work on its sight alignment
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — A lot of moving parts leads to extended time working out the kinks, yet for Central Michigan Soccer Sunday afternoon, a familiar face provided an anchor that helped ease the transition of an overhauled roster in a scoreless draw against Wright State University (OH).
Goalkeeper Allison LaPoint (Royal Oak, Mich. / Shrine Catholic) stepped onto the pitch for a regular-season contest for the first time since 2021 in the Chippewas' (0-0-2) home-opener to man the posts, tallying three saves.
"Extremely happy with the clean sheet in welcoming Allison back," Head Coach Jeremy Groves said.
The shutout was aided by Central Michigan's offensive work, spending over 60 percent of its possession time in the forward half of the field to mark 24 shots with nine on-target. Forward Lauren Walker (Essexville, Mich. / Garber) brought the most pressure with three on-target attempts while midfielders Claudia Muessig (Paw Paw, Mich. / Paw Paw) and Jocelin Zimmerer (Evergreen, Colo. / Evergreen) shared the team-high in five shots.
"We were able to do lots of things we worked on in training," Groves continued. "To see us execute so well is encouraging so early in the season; the goals will come."
LaPoint posted all three saves in the first half as the combined back line efforts led by center back Rachel Logue (Oak Hills, Calif. / Serrano) and right back Payton Russo (Medina, Ohio / IMG Academy) worked to plug the leaks from the first 45 minutes. Up front, the Chippewas were more selective with their shots while keeping the ball in the attacking third.
"I thought we were good throughout the second half. We created great opportunities. Today was just one of those days where we just couldn't find the back of the net."
In all, five Chippewas fired at least three times as forward Jenna Little (Portage, Mich. / Central) and midfielder Megan Scholten (Charlevoix, Mich. / Charlevoix) joined the trio of Walker, Muessig and Zimmerer.
"We have some good things to build off of as we play a couple of tough teams next," Groves concluded.
As the wrinkles continue to be ironed out, Central Michigan Soccer looks ahead to a pair of Power-Five road contests at Cincinnati (Aug. 31) and at Louisville (Sept. 3).
