Phillips and Hunter lead Chippewas through rainy tournament
FARMINGTON, Pa. – Central Michigan Men's Golf finished West Virginia's Nemacolin Invite on Tuesday, battling rainy conditions through the three-round tournament.
The Chippewas shot 308 in the final round on Tuesday, which added to their round one and two scores of 309 and 326, respectively, to finish with a score of 943.
The Chippewas finished one stroke ahead of Mount St. Mary's, which finished with a 314-314-316 line.
Junior Easton Phillips carded 1-over 73 on Tuesday, resulting in a 227 final score. He finished in 33rd place, leading CMU.
Keith Hunter, also a junior, led the Chippewas' round three performance with an even 72. He finished 56th with a three-round total of 234.
Jeffrey Andrus and Nicholas Kilgore rounded out the Chippewa lineup on Tuesday. Andrus shot 79 on Tuesday, finishing 58th (235), Kilgore finished 72nd (253).
Orlando Coons, a junior, withdrew from the tournament after injury in round two.
"I see a lot of room for improvement; however, I do see some progress." said Head Coach Kevin Jennings. "It's indicated in the scores that were shot today. Some of the scores that were shot are not indicative of the way they played out of the 18 holes, some guys may have had two or three bad holes.
"They played the majority of the day well; it's just learning to mitigate the challenges you encounter out there and improve upon ball striking so we can improve the overall score. There were a lot of opportunities to learn, and I saw today that a lot of that was seized. We're looking forward to continuing to learn, grow, and move forward."
The Mountaineers finished at the top of the leaderboard with 866 final score (288-291-287). 12 strokes behind was George Mason's 294-299-285 – 878 for second place. Seton Hall rounded out the top three with a final line of 302-287-294 – 883.
The Chippewas round out the fall slate on Oct. 13-14 in the Motor City Matchup, a jointly-hosted match play event with CMU Women's Golf. The tournament will be hosted at the Birmingham Country Club in Birmingham, Mich.
