GROVE CITY, Ohio – The Central Michigan Men's Golf team ended their season Tuesday afternoon with the third round of the Mid-American Conference Championship. The gusty round, briefly interrupted due to weather, was held at the Pinnacle Golf Club and hosted by Bowling Green and featured all nine MAC men's golf programs.
The Chippewa golfers finished ninth after a 313-stroke performance in round three. Round one and two scores of 303 and 305 brought the team's tournament total to 921, eight strokes behind eighth place Ohio.
"(As a team) They bonded a little better, supported one another, and keyed in on the points that we were trying to focus on in order to get better," CMU Head Coach Kevin Jennings said of the team's performance throughout the tournament, "I felt the score may not reflect the way in which we were able to do that because we are still a young program and still a relatively young team. In my opinion, those things cant be discounted in building for our future."
Keith Hunter recorded an even-par 72 over the last 18, logging three birdies, and climbing 17 spots on the leaderboard to finish in a tie for 16th. Hunter logged 74 (+2) over his first 18, and 76 (+4) in his second for a total score of 222.
"I challenged him to execute something in a certain way, and he was able to do it and key in on it and get better and better at it," Jennings said of Hunter's final round, "He understands that this is very impactful to his game, so that's why he was able to benefit from being able to focus on that a little better."
Jeffrey Andrus finished the tournament with a 233 total score, tallying 78 (+6) in the final round with three birdies. Andrus finished rounds one and two with scores of 76 (+4) and 79 (+7), respectively.
Easton Phillips carded 85 (+13) on the final round. His scores of 76 (+4) and 75 (+3) bring him to a 236 total for 40th place.
Jeffrey Sager logged 90 in the third round, tallied 77 (+5) in round one, and 75 (+3) in round two, for 242 on the tournament to tie for 41st.
Nicholas Kilgore logged 78 (+6) Tuesday, recording a 243 three-round total and a 44th place finish.
Kent State secured the team championship, recording 854 in the tournament, 16 strokes ahead of second place Ball State.
The Golden Flashes' Jordan Gilkison won the individual championship, scoring 208 in the tournament. Three strokes behind Gilkison was Eastern Michigan's Rory McDonald-O'Brien. Rounding out the top three was Bryce Reed, a Golden Flash, who tallied 212 over 54 holes.
The closing of the MAC Championship marks the end of the Chippewas' memorable 2024-25 season.
"Japan sticks out tremendously in my mind as the most memorable moment, because I'm sure as a program we've never competed internationally. Another part would be the fact that we were able to make history at our event we hosted in California (The Bridgestone Collegiate Invitational) for the second year in a row by having HBCU's and international teams compete, that had never been done. This year we had two international teams instead of one. That's another memorable thing in relation to what we're doing.
"Additionally, the fact that we had the recent announcement of our practice facility coming online. That's another big-time moment. So, we have a lot of great things that we're trending towards in regard to our program that allows our future to be very bright."
