CMU eyes best finish in league championship tournament
ZIONSVILLE, Ind. – Two-thirds of the way through, and Central Michigan sits in a very good position.
The Chippewas shot a 303 team score on Tuesday in the second round of the Mid-American Conference Championships at The Club at Holliday Farms.
CMU is in fourth place in the nine-team field with a 603 total. They are 10 shots behind third-place Northern Illinois and four ahead of three teams, Bowling Green, Ball State and Kent State, tied for fifth.
The final round is set to begin at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
The Chippewas are vying for their best finish in the MAC Championships. The program, resurrected in 2022-23 after a 37-year hiatus, finished sixth in 2023 tournament and ninth in each of the last two.
Sophomore Aydan Downer led the Chippewas on Monday with a 3-over par 74, while freshman Hudson Vedder posted a 4-over 75. Senior Jeffrey Andrus Jr. and redshirt junior Philippe Yturralde both shot a 6-over 77, and senior Keith Hunter carded a 10-over 81.
Andrus and Downer are among a group tied for 16th at 9-over, Hunter is tied for 21st at 10-over, Vedder (12-over) is tied for 24th, and Yturralde (14-over) is tied for 30th.
The field comprises 42 players.
Eastern Michigan shot a 296 on Monday and leads the tournament by one shot over Miami (Ohio), which posted a 289 on Monday. The Eagles are at 584, the RedHawks at 585. Northern Illinois (585) is third.
Patrick Raupp of Northern Illinois and Joshua Hess of Eastern Michigan are even-par 142 and tied for the top spot, three shots ahead of Toledo's Bence Kotel and EMU's Rory O'Brien.
