Late-match heroics from Walker sends Chippewas back atop MAC bubble race
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Central Michigan Soccer tallied a crucial 2-1 victory over Bowling Green in Mid-American Conference play Friday night.
Â
Lauren Walker (Essexville, Mich. / Garber) took home the game-winner in the 87th minute as she out-raced a Falcon defender to a line-drive service into the box from Gabriella Sapia (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson), settled by Jaelyn Dobrowolski (Traverse City, Mich. / TC West) in front of the 6' to mark the first double-assist strike for the Chippewas this season.
Â
"Lauren scored a big goal for us there at the end, gambled on it a little bit and went for it," Head Coach Jeremy Groves said.
Â
"I thought we were under a lot of pressure there. In previous years, we would have crumbled, but this year we've toughened up in our belief where we nicked one at the end as opposed to them."
Â
Claudia Muessig (Paw Paw, Mich. / Paw Paw) drew first blood for Central Michigan in the 22nd minute as she collected a Bowling Green turnover for an immediate strike outside the 18', briefly extending her team-high to five goals on the season before Walker's winner marked her fourth.
Â
The Chippewas had their bright moments, but overall, the belief is they still have room to grow.
Â
"I thought we struggled at times but this part of the season, it's just finding a way to win. In the second half, we brought a lot of pressure, we made some adjustments to try to stop the bleeding a little bit, which worked. Then, obviously, we were able to make one at the end."
Â
The victory marked a vocal rebound for CMU after back-to-back losses last week at home against Ball State (Oct. 10; L, 1-0), then at Kent State (Oct. 13; L, 3-2). The Chippewas vaulted from sixth to fourth in the league standings with the win, within a result of Buffalo and Ohio, above a three-team log-jam for fifth between the Falcons, Kent State and Toledo.
Â
"That win was huge for us because it keeps us in the playoff hunt. We have to keep going from here. The MAC right now is ridiculous; there's no real big separators."
Â
Central Michigan Soccer will host Miami (OH) Thursday before its final regular season road trip at Ohio (Oct. 27), then the home finale against Buffalo (Oct. 31).
