Strong Start for Chippewa Track and Field at GVSU Holiday Open

Chippewas notch 12 top-10 finishes, 5 personal-bests
ALLENDALE, Mich.— Central Michigan Track and Field opened its 2024-25 indoor slate on Friday at Grand Valley State's Holiday Open, which provided opportunity for 15 of its freshmen to compete collegiately for the first time.
The Chippewas saw a handful of big finishes and achievements on opening day, with 5 student-athletes attaining personal records and notching 12 top-10 finishes.
Freshman Amyah Chosa brought home first in the shot put with a mark of 12.81m in a field of 23 throwers. Ereka Risner saw an indoor personal best and placed 3rd with a mark of 12.54m. Risner, a junior, finished 17th in weight throw.
In the pole vault, sophomore Emily Yoshino placed 4th with a height of 3.50m. Riley Nielsen set a collegiate personal-best height of 3.35m to finish 9th. Lynette Cipolla and freshman Alexandra Cinzori both finished 15th with a height of 3.05m.
The Chippewa jumpers additionally competed in the high jump and long jump. Riley Kerr, a freshman, placed 4th in the high jump, clearing 1.64m. Peyton Spicer, also a freshman, finished 9th while Cipolla finished 17th. Freshman Hailey Hill advanced to the finals in the long jump in her first collegiate meet and finished 9th with a leap of 5.21m.
For the Chippewa sprinters were Sky Austin, Mireya Benjamin, Dior Newson, Kaitlynn Rush, Robyn Watts and Danica Shamion, with Benjamin, Newson and Shamion competing in their first collegiate races.
Rush, a senior, placed 8th in the 60m and the 200m dashes. Austin, a sophomore, set personal best times in both races, finishing 27th and 29th in the races, respectively. Benjamin finished 12th in the 60m and 20th in the 200m dash, while Newson finished 25th and 23rd, respectively.
Shamion competed in the 200m and 400m dashes, finishing 18th in each. Watts finished 24th in the 400m.
Freshmen Jada Pride and Ciara Rosenzweig ran the 60m hurdles; Pride finished 17th with a time of 9.47 while Rosenzweig finished 19th.
Grace Jenkins and Libby Munderloh competed in the 800m; Munderloh finished 14th and Jenkins ran a personal-best time to finish 18th.
Representing CMU in the mile run were freshmen Olivia East and Lois Creasey, who finished 5th and 9th, respectively, in a 44-runner field. Miranda McNeil and Braydee Elling, also freshmen, competed in the 2nd heat of the 3,000m to finished 6th and 8th, respectively.
Munderloh, East, Grace Jenkins and Creasey comprised a squad for the 4x400 relay, which finished 5th overall with a time of 3:59.85.
Logan Brazee, Emma Janesak, Emma Netzel and Kate Jenkins ran the 5,000m for CMU. In the third heat, Janesak finished 7th, Brazee finished 14th and Netzel finished 18th. Jenkins closed out CMU's day in the second heat of the race in the evening, finishing 15th in personal-best time.
While CMU will not compete again as a team until 2025, Emily Paupore is scheduled to run in the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener on Saturday, Dec. 7.
The Chippewas will return to action on Jan. 17 at the Jack Skoog Open, one of CMU's two indoor meets for the season.
