TUCSON, Ariz. – The second day of the Hillenbrand Invitational hosted by Arizona ended in two losses for Central Michigan Softball. CMU falls to 1-8 on the season. The games were dropped to Drake (3-4) and Marshall (0-4)
GAME 1
CMU led for three innings against Drake in the first game of the day. After trailing 2-0 to the Bulldogs after a two-run homerun in the second inning, CMU responded to score three across the third and fourth. The 3-2 lead for the Chippewas would hold until the bottom of the seventh when Drake scored their winning run on a defensive error by Central Michigan.
Grace Lehto took the loss for CMU after going the distance for her first complete game of the season. Lehto struck out seven in the outing, while surrendering just five hits and three walks.
The offensive production for the Chippewas came when Coberley reached on a fielding error with the bases loaded, allowing Abbey Tolmie to score. In the fourth inning, freshman Carly Sleeman recorded her fifth double of the season when she notched two RBI as Bryn Elsenpeter and Tailynn Knapp scored.
GAME 2
The Herd of Marshall scored four runs in the first two innings, then would be held scoreless for the rest.
Madelyn Wallace took the start for CMU and was responsible for all four runs. Wallace was relieved by Brooklyn Compau for one inning of work where she struck out two of the three batters she faced. Cierra Laska ended the game in the circle where she faced seven batters and allowed no hits.
WHAT COMES NEXT
Central Michigan will close out their trip to Arizona when they take on the host Wildcats. Arizona is ranked No. 23 in the nation prior to the Chippewas meeting with them. First pitch is slated for 1:30 p.m. (ET)
