Central Michigan fell to Georgia Southern 2-3 in the opening game of the USF Tournament.
TAMPA, Fla. – A battle to the end fell the wrong way for the Central Michigan Softball as it opened the USF Tournament with a 3-2 loss to Georgia Southern on Friday. Grace Lehto took the start for CMU and threw five complete innings, struck out four and issued just three hits to the Eagles. Madelyn Wallace entered in the sixth inning to relieve Lehto. Wallace faced the final four batters allowing no hits.
CMU falls to 1-10 on the season while Georgia Southern advances to 11-3 on their 2024 campaign.
The Central Michigan offense was highlighted by freshman Carly Sleeman who hit her first collegiate homerun in the fifth inning. The laser over the left field wall would be the final run for either team scored in the game.
Sleeman was the only Chippewa to cross home plate as she scored on a Coberley single up the middle in the third ining. In the outing, Tailynn Knapp and Keira Tolmie also recorded hits.
The Chippewas outhit the Eagles 4-3 on the day, but an error in the first inning allowed the first run to score before Georgia Southern even recorded a hit.
Central Michigan and Villanova will face off on Saturday March 2, for the second game of the tournament. The game is slated to start at 11 a.m. (ET).
