Chippewas set season-high marks on beam and on bars; Skrupa and Germond each set career highs on bars
EAST LANSING, Mich. – In its final quad of the 2024 regular season, CMU Gymnastics put up a team score of 196.425 in placing second at the Jenison Field House at Michigan State on Saturday.
The Chippewas' team score tied their season-high, while host Michigan State won with a score of 198.150. Competitors Fisk University and Greenville University took third and fourth place, respectively.
"I thought today was a really strong team performance," Head Coach Christine MacDonald said. "We had some season highs on certain events, and overall it was just a really great team performance.
"It was definitely a potential score build that we've been looking for. I thought (this performance) came at a good time, but more importantly, it's been something we have been building up all season long."
The Chippewas best event came in their third rotation, as CMU logged a score of 49.375 on the floor exercise. Highlighting the rotation were seniors Ashley Veglucci and Hallie Hornbacher, who each earned a score of 9.900 on their respective routines to tie for fourth in the event.
"Our focus we've talked about is continuing to improve routine after routine and that's something in the gym we've been spending a lot of time on," MacDonald said. "The details and really focusing on how to gain every half tenth per routine is something we're going to continue to focus on for the next couple of weeks."
The first event of the meet for CMU was also rather eventful. A pair of Chippewas (junior Quinn Skrupa and freshman Jenna Germond) set career highs on the uneven parallel bars, each scoring 9.825 and tying for a fifth-place finish with sophomore Luciana Alvarado-Reid.
Additionally, CMU recorded its season-high score in the event with a 49.025.
The Chippewas followed up their first rotation by setting another event season-high score on the balance beam with a 49.075. Their best individual performance in the event was courtesy of freshman Samantha Shannon, whose 9.850 earned her a share of fourth place.
CMU closed the meet out on vault, where senior Elizabeth Cesarone led the Chippewas with a 9.875 and a tie for second place. Her and Alvarado-Reid (9.825) were the only two gymnasts in the event among the top eight scorers that weren't from Michigan State. CMU ended the event with a score of 48.950.
Alvarado-Reid was one of five gymnasts to compete in each event, earning a second-place finish with an all-around score of 39.350.
"Lucy had another solid all-around score which is really continuing to separate her not only within the conference but nationally," MacDonald said.
The Chippewas are slated to close out the regular season on Friday, March 15 (6 p.m.) by hosting MAC-leading Western Michigan, which will celebrate the program's seven graduating seniors and welcome back a handful of Chippewa Gymnastics alumni.
