Team 46 split in their last day of The Spring Games in Madeira Beach, Fla. The Chippewas will next open MAC play in Mount Pleasant.
The tournament in Madeira Beach is a staple for the CMU Softball program and they will depart the five game weekend with two wins under its belt. The Chippewas totaled 40 hits over the five games, scored 31 runs and struck out 23 batters as a pitching staff. CMU hit four home runs in the stretch – three in the final day.
A definite step in the right direction for Team 46 as they enter MAC play.
GAME 1
Central Michigan struck first in the game against the Mocs when Abbey Tolmie tripled down the right field line to score Grace Koenig who reached via walk to start the game. Michaleigh Vallimont followed that up with a single through the left side where Abbey Tolmie came home. 2-0 Chippewas.
CMU would not score again until the 7th inning when Carly Sleeman hit her second homerun of her freshman season to score Skylar Coberley who reached via walk. The comeback effort would fall ultimately short for the Chippewas in the first game of the day.
Mackenzie Langan made her first career start for the Chippewas where she threw for three innings, faced 16 batters and struck out three. Langan was relieved in the fourth inning by Cierra Laska who tossed for 1.1 innings until Madelyn Wallace took the final 14 batters for CMU. On the day, Langan and Laska each allowed three runs while Wallace allowed just one in her 2.2 innings.
GAME 2
The Chippewas closed the nightcap with a dominant 12-3 victory over Colgate in five innings. CMU recorded their 12 runs on 10 hits and held Colgate to just five in the game. Freshman Brooklyn Compau ended with the win decision after throwing just one complete inning. Copmau was relieved by Laska for her second appearance of the day. Laska threw two innings, faced nine batters, struck out two and issued just two hits. In the fourth inning, Grace Lehto entered the circle to face the final eight batters over six outs for the Chippewas. Lehto struck out two and allowed just two hits.
The scoring began for the Chippewas in the first inning when Skylar Coberley stole second, drew a throw and allowed Grace Koenig to cross home plate. A two-run homerun from Michaleigh Vallimont gave CMU the 3-0 lead in the middle of the third. Colgate had an answer with a fielder's choice scoring a run and a two-run homerun of their own. Colgate would not score for the rest of the game.
The Chippewas however, would not take their foot off the gas. In the second inning, Abbey Tolmie struck again with a single to left field which scored Maddie Springer. In the fifth inning, Allyssa Hollo took her own ball yard for a two-run homerun; 7-3 Chippewas. The fifth inning is where CMU broke it open against Colgate.
Seven runs on five hits came in that inning with the Hollo homerun. A single by Koenig scored Rachel Cairo who pinch hit in the inning and drew a walk. A Coberley single then scored Koenig and Tailynn Knapp. When Carly Sleeman hit her 7th double of the season, she scored Coberley and Abbey Tolmie.
The game would conclude in five innings due to the run-rule limit.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Chippewas will head back to Mount Pleasant where they will prepare to open their conference season when they host Northern Illinois for a three-game series over March 15th and 16th at Margo Jonker Stadium. The series will start with a single game at 3 p.m. on Friday the 15th, and then a double header starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Central Michigan made strides of growth over the weekend in Madeira Beach and throughout the vigorous preseason schedule.
