Stuart and Jackson each deliver a pair of knocks and a double

ORLANDO, Fla. – Central Michigan Baseball lost its series-deciding contest at UCF on Sunday, 23-3. The Chippewas took game one of the series from the Knights with a complete-game shutout from Ben Vitas before dropping the next two.

The contest, which was called after seven innings, featured a 10-run inning from UCF along with a pair of 5-run frames.

CMU entered the bottom of the fourth inning tied 3-3 after the Chippewas collected a pair of runs from Cole Prout and Drew Loikits on a throwing error. Loikits was also responsible for CMU's first run, when he delivered an RBI groundout to score Ely Stuart during the top of the second.

The 10-run frame from UCF came in the bottom of the fifth inning, during which the Knights collected six hits and took advantage of a throwing error on a pickoff attempt. The inning was sandwiched between a fourth and sixth inning that each saw UCF plate five runs.

CMU starting pitcher Bryce Hellgeth tossed two innings before being pulled, giving up five hits and three earned runs. Evan Waters (4-3) entered in relief of Hellgeth in the third inning, also providing two innings of work and giving up five earned runs on six hits. Waters delivered three of CMU's five strikeouts on the day.

Also pitching in the contest were Keegan Batka, Sean Knorr, Jake Brown, and two-way player Carter Campau, who also catches. Campau gave up two runs in the sixth, but also delivered the only two strikeouts from the Chippewas' bullpen on the day.

Along with Loikits' contributions, CMU's offense was led by Marquis Jackson and Stuart, who each picked up a pair of hits and a double. Jake Brill and Danny Wuestenfeld rounded out the attack, each chipping in a hit of their own.

The Chippewas will head to South Bend, Ind. for a midweek contest at Notre Dame on Wednesday (Apr. 24) at 6 p.m. ET before heading back to Mount Pleasant for a league series against Northern Illinois next weekend.
