Sleeman and Vallimont Homer but Efforts Fall Short in Akron for Softball

Central Michigan dropped the first two games of the series with Akron in the Rubber City.
AKRON, Ohio – The Central Michigan Softball team dropped the first two games of the series with Akron on the road. Falling 0-4 and 6-7 to the Zips. CMU moves to 13-28 overall and 10-9 in MAC play. The series will conclude when the teams face off on Saturday at 1 p.m.
In game one, Grace Lehto took the start and threw four complete innings before being relieved by freshman Booklyn Compau who faced the final six batters. Lehto allowed seven hits and four runs for the Zips: all the scoring in the game. Combining for eight strikeouts, Lehto collected five while Compau struck out three, half of the batters she saw.
The Chippewas stranded nine base runners in the game, six of those runners were stranded in three consecutive innings on second and third. Skylar Cobereley, who played in her 200th career game, recorded two hits in the first game. Carly Sleeman, Emma Lotus, Michaleigh Vallimont & Maddie Springer rounded out the hits for the Chippewas. Sleeman hit her 16th double of the season in the outing.
Game two started with a bang as Carly Sleeman ripped her fourth home run of the season, a solo blast. In the second inning, an RBI double from Emma Lotus gave CMU the 2-0 tilt. Michaleigh Vallimont hit a home run of her own in the fourth, her career 10th. The fourth inning ended 3-0 CMU.
In the fifth inning, Madelyn Wallace entered the circle in relief for Mackenize Langan who made her fourth career start. Wallace issued four hits and allowed four runs. Brooklyn Compau entered in relief that inning, with bases loaded, one out, and CMU holding a 3-1 lead. A Zip hit by a pitch and walked added two more for Akron in the inning, along with a sacrifice fly that concluded the fifth inning at 3-4 in favor of the Zips.
Michaleigh Vallimont started the sixth inning off with a single through the left side and her run was scored by Tailynn Knapp when Maddie Springer doubled to turn the lineup over. An Abbey Tolmie single scored Emma Lotus who singled and Maddie Springer when the Zip third baseman committed a fielding error.
Middle of the 6th, CMU regained the lead, 6-4.
In the bottom of the inning, a three-run homerun on a full count with two outs would seal the game making it 6-7, Akron.
The Chippewas and Zips will close the series on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Lee R. Jackson Field.
