Chippewas run through scrimmage in full pads under sunny skies at Kramer/Deromedi Field at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.—The Central Michigan Football program finished its first of two scrimmages Friday afternoon at Kramer/Deromedi Field at Kelly/Shorts Stadium. The Chippewas wore full pads in the two-hour scrimmage under sunny skies.
Central Michigan's second spring scrimmage is scheduled for Saturday, April 13. More details on next Saturday's scrimmage will be available next week.
CMU worked on a variety of in-game situations including goal line sets, down and distance, yard line and field goal, punt, punt return, kickoff, and kickoff return. The Chippewas also simulated a real game with in-game flow on both offense and defense. The defense was able to tackle, except the quarterbacks. A full complement of officials were present to make calls.
Offensive highlights included a play action touchdown pass from Bert Emanuel, Jr. to Solomon Davis that covered 28 yards on the first drive of the scrimmage, 80 and 60-yard touchdown passes from Jadyn Glasser to Matteo Carriere and Evan Boyd, respectively, a 40-yard touchdown pass to B.J. Harris, in which Emanuel found Harris wide open on the sideline, and a four-yard touchdown run by Joe Labas after he faked a handoff and raced into the end zone. Other plays included a Labas hookup with Javorian Wimberley, which he caught over his shoulder, a Tyler Jefferson pass to Rory Callahan, and two Emanuel passes to Chris Parker. All four quarterbacks made nice plays and moved the offense.
The defense also came up with highlights including an interception by Jaree Turner, who stepped in front of a pass and returned it 20 yards the other way, two sacks and a tackle for loss by Justin Whiteside, and sacks by Marcus Badgett, Ke'Shon Parker, Jonah Pace, a pass breakup by Badgett, and combination sacks by Jason Williams, Pius Odjugo, and Kade Kostus.
Special Teams highlights were provided by placekicker Tristan Mattson, who nailed a 51-yard field goal and barely missed on a second try, punter David Chapeau, who boomed long several punts, including one from deep inside his own end zone. Mattson also converted a 37-yard field goal.
