Chippewas Take Final Game Over Western Michigan

Three Chippewas register multi-hit games in victory over WMU in the series finale.
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Team 46 battled as a true unit in a 5-2 victory over Western Michigan to take the final game of the series at Ebert Field. The Chippewas advance to 7-23 on the season and 4-5 in MAC play while Western moves to 17-15 overall and 6-4 in the MAC.
Grace Lehto threw her second complete game of the weekend in the outing while allowing seven hits. The Chippewa defense supported Lehto in lock down fashion as there were only two Broncos that crossed home plate as WMU stranded seven runners in the game.
Western Michigan struck first with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first inning to take the 1-0 lead. CMU answered with two runs of their own in the top of the second when Maddie Springer singled up the middle and drove in Skylar Coberely and Grace Koenig.
Koenig and Coberley were two of the three Chippewas that recorded two hits in the outing, as they both reached on singles in the second inning.
The Chippewas won the second inning as they stranded a Bronco on first and got three quick outs.
In the third, CMU added another run with Koenig's second hit of the day, a double to left center, that double scored Coberley who reached base on a Bronco error, 3-1 Chippewas. Western Michigan responded with their second run of the game, their final run, with an RBI single to right field.
The lead for Central Michigan was padded in the fourth with two runs. Abbey Tolmie singled to center field and Angela Petrovitch crossed the dish after entering as a pinch runner for Maddie Springer who reached on her second base hit of the day. The fifth run for the Chippewas came after Coberley's second hit of the day, which scored Tolmie from third.
Western Michigan threatened in fifth inning when they had runners on first and second with one out, and their cleanup hitter at the plate. A deep fly ball to the right field fence was grabbed on a leap by Michaleigh Vallimont to just allow the runners to advance one base. After making the catch, Vallimont reassured her pitcher "I have your back Grace, never worry!"
A four-batter sixth inning for the Broncos, and a final 1-2-3 inning ended the game for the Chippewas.
Next, Central Michigan will head to Ann Arbor to take on Michigan in a non-conference match up. Michaleigh Vallimont and the Chippewas will be taking on Vallimont's younger sister, Lilly Vallimont and the Wolverines at 6 p.m. at Alumni Field at Carol Hutchins Stadium.
