Survive and Advance – Softball Earns Another Day by Eliminating Western Michigan at MAC Tournament
5/8/2024 10:36:00 PM | Softball
Softball defeats Western Michigan in its second game of the 2024 Mid-American Conference Tournament.
The conference tournament is a double elimination style tournament, so the next loss for the Chippewas sends them home and ends their season. CMU will face the lower seed of the losers in the No. 1 Miami (OH) and No. 4 Toledo game or the No. 2 Ohio and No. 6 Ball State game.
In the first game, CMU fell to the Rockets 6-3. In that game, CMU found itself in a four-run deficit after the second inning. The Chippewas had a chance to score in the top of the first, but the runner was caught at home from the outfield. Toledo's runs came via a solo homerun, two RBI singles and a sacrifice fly.
Central Michigan got on the board when Grace Koenig tripled down the left field line which scored Skylar Coberley, who was on first base.
Alyssa Hollo's two-run homer scored Coberley again and the Chippewas trailed at that point 5-3. In the bottom of the sixth, a triple for Toledo scored their final run.
Grace Lehto took the start in the game, and she threw one complete inning before being relieved by Mackenzie Langan in the second with bases loaded and no outs. Lehto issued five hits and allowed four runs for Toledo. Lehto faced eight batters.
Langan threw the final five innings for CMU, allowing two runs on six hits. The only strikeout and walk of the Chippewa pitching staff was issued under Langan.
The second game of the day showed the fight and heart of the Chippewas as they gutted out a scrappy 4-3 win over rival Western Michigan.
Brooklyn Compau took the start for the Chippewas in game two. Compau threw four complete innings. Compau issued seven hits, allowing the three runs Western Michigan scored in the game. Cierra Laska entered to relieve Compau in the fifth inning, where she faced five batters, and took the decision in the game. Grace Lehto entered to relieve Laska in the sixth inning, to face the final seven batters, charting two strikeouts and allowing just one hit. Lehto earned her fourth save of her senior year in the outing.
Offensively, the Chippewas were led once again by Allyssa Hollo and her homerun stick. In the fourth inning, Hollo hit her second homerun of the day, driving in Skylar Coberley once again. That shot gave CMU the 2-1 lead over the Broncos who scored on a sacrifice fly in the second inning.
"Allyssa Hollo offensively provided huge sparks for us in both games. Her hits allowed us to start some rallies." said Coach McCall Salmon. Hollo has homered in four of the last seven games for the Chippewas, and totals seven in her junior year with twelve in her career.
In the fifth inning, CMU scored two more runs on three hits. Maddie Springer started the inning with a single up the middle and was moved over by a sacrifice bunt from Emma Lotus. Angela Petrovitch who pinch ran for Springer, scored CMU's third run of the game when Abbey Tolmie singled up the middle herself. When Carly Sleeman also singled up the middle, Abbey Tolmie scored.
Halfway through the fifth, CMU led 4-1 over the Broncos.
Western Michigan strung together five hits in their half of the inning to come within one, but the Chippewas were able to fend off the rest of their scoring efforts in the final two innings.
The tournament being a double elimination style, had the Chippewas fighting for their season in the game against the Broncos. Fifth year Head Coach, McCall Salmon has taken the Chippewas to the tournament in the last three seasons; the only three seasons in her time a conference tournament has been held.
On the topic of fighting to keep their season alive, Coach Salmon said, "I think as we entered game two, we knew we had to survive and advance and just focus on taking care of business. I think Brooklyn stepped into the circle and gave us some quality innings. Cierra and Grace did the same thing, and Grace just had the opportunity to finish it out. That is what we needed out of the game today and we got to utilize the strengths of our pitching staff."
The next game for the Chippewas will be at 5:30 p.m. (ET) on Thursday against the lower seed of the two losers in the games prior to them. "The thing with this group is that you don't have to keep them locked in. At this point, they know what job they need to get done. I think Team 46 is up for the task. We are used to pivoting, and handling whatever situation is handed to us. We will take on any opponent we are handed and compete."
