Field Hockey falls just short in overtime battle with Longwood

Penalty corner goal from Pauline Klep and Amelia Lane keep CMU alive in 58th minute
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Fought to the very end.
Central Michigan Field Hockey showed grit and determination on Friday, despite having fallen to Longwood in its Mid-American Conference Opener, 2-1, in overtime at Cristy Freese Field.
The Chippewas outshot the Lancers, 15-11, with eight of those shots meeting the target to Longwood's six. CMU outshot Longwood in three of four quarters and maintained strong possession of the ball in the second half of the game, having not allowed the Lancers a penalty corner draw in the third or fourth periods.
CMU, fighting from an 0-1 deficit from the third minute to the 58th minute, capitalizing on a strategy rarely seen in field hockey to force overtime.
Placing full trust in her team, Head Coach Jennifer Johnstone opted to pull goalie Jenna Billig in place for an additional attacker in the 55th minute.
The attacker? Amelia Lane, who inserted all seven of CMU's penalty corners.
A Lancers foul in the shooting circle gave the Chippewas just the opportunity they needed in the 58th minute. Lane inserted the ball to Pauline Klep, who took an opportunity at the back of the cage and came up big.
Klep, a sophomore, scored her second career goal with a top shelf shot just out of Longwood's reach, tying the game at 1-1.
Longwood scored the game-winning goal in the 64th minute.
Alongside Klep, who was 1-2 on shots on goal, and Lane, who took two shots, the Chippewas were additionally led by Mallory Camryn, who made two shots on goal.
Also tallying shots on goal for the Chippewas were Hannah Havrilla, Cosima Perleth, Kaitlyn Bowker, Annabelle Cotroneo and Isabella D'Allesandro.
Billig, a freshman, went the distance in the cage and made four saves. The Elysburg, Pa. native now has 20 career saves.
CMU, now 3-5, 0-1 MAC, looks to even the conference record with a pair of tough tests in league-leaders James Madison and Appalachian State.
JMU, which is 3-1 overall, won its league opener over Miami (Ohio) Friday afternoon. Second-ranked Appalachian State won, 2-0, over Ohio on Friday.
The Chippewas will travel to Harrisonburg, Va. to take on the Dukes on Friday, Sept. 27 (2 p.m.). CMU will play Appalachian State on Sunday at noon.
