Chippewas post MAC-high 195.600; Another AA win for Alvarado-Reid
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio — Central Michigan Gymnastics has extended its victory streak to four after posting a tri-meet win at Bowling Green on Sunday, besting the Falcons and Southeast Missouri State.
CMU performed its way to a season-high 195.600 score, the highest out of any Mid-American Conference institution through three weeks of competition. Bowling Green finished 2nd with a score of 192.600 and SEMO finished at 192.375.
"Today definitely was a step in the right direction," said Head Coach Christine MacDonald of her team's performance. "We've been working really hard, and it was nice to see it pay off."
The Chippewas, now 4-1 overall, picked up their first MAC win of the season over the Falcons on Jan. 17, and are currently 1-0 in league competition. They will host SEMO on Thursday, Feb. 6 with UW-Oshkosh in McGuirk Arena.
CMU opened on the balance beam, the first of four events that the Chippewas would win, with a season-high score of 48.725. Luciana Alvarado-Reid placed 1st with a score of 9.800 while her teammates Zoie Pelfrey and Hannah Appleget tied for 2nd with 9.750.
"We moved some lineups around and they're finding their competitive flow," MacDonald said. "Starting on the beam was a different flow for us in a meet, but we've done a lot of work this week, we put in the time and it showed.
"They came out strong and consistent and it really set the meet up. I think our lineups and events are building off each other and that's something we haven't been able to do in the last few weeks; finding that flow in those four events helped us to a strong, competitive and connective performance today."
Alvarado-Reid won the all-around with a 39.275 contribution, including an impressive 9.900 on the floor exercise for another event win. She tied for second on the uneven bars, CMU's best event of the afternoon, with a score of 9.800 and scored 9.775 on vault.
The Chippewas scored 49.050 on the uneven bars, helped along by a season-high 9.875 by Appleget, who won the event. Alongside Alvarado-Reid, sophomore Samantha Shannon and freshman Kaitlyn Schwab shared 2nd place.
"Hannah (Appleget) had a great day for us," MacDonald said of the senior, who additionally competed on the floor. "It was her best meet yet this year; what she did today was a solid three-event performance. She gave us the depth and competitive experience that we've been looking for.
Ava Wellmeier continued to shine in her specialties, as the Zanesville, Ohio freshman won vault with a career-high 9.850. She placed second on the floor exercise, tying her career-best score of 9.825.
"Ava's a strong competitor for us in both of those events," said MacDonald. "She's definitely learned to compete well in the second half of the lineup and has been a good solid score for us."
CMU scored 48.875 and 48.950 on the vault and floor exercise, respectively.
The Chippewas will celebrate National Girls & Women in Sports Day with a 'Pink Out' on Feb. 6 in McGuirk Arena as CMU hosts SEMO and UW-Oshkosh in its final non-league matchups of the season.
