First-ever meeting in Mid-American Conference play between CMU, UMass falls in favor of the Minutewomen
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Central Michigan Soccer dropped its first-ever meeting with Massachusetts in Mid-American Conference competition Sunday, 2-0.
For the first time in MAC play, second this season, the Chippewas outshot their opponent in total, 15-8, and in on-target attempts, 6-4.
"I feel like we created four, five, or maybe six really good opportunities but yet we don't get on the score sheet," Head Coach Jeremy Groves said.
However, UMass collected both of its tallies via corner kicks, a stark 8-4 advantage for the Minutewomen.
"Ultimately, we gave up two on set pieces again. We didn't deserve to lose that game given our performance overall, but what we are judged on is the two and the zero."
The contest began in a bittersweet tone as the Chippewas recognized the careers of their senior trio—Camryn Dunn, Gabriella Sapia, and Taylor Primack—prior to the contest: a stark contrast to the 2024 senior recognition that included 15 players.
Dunn is the only four-year Chippewa on the roster of a young squad dominated by freshmen and sophomores this season.
Melaina Troy (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Hills), the season's first goal scorer, led the charge with three of CMU's six on-target attempts, twice alerting the UMass keeper from just outside the 6'.
Central Michigan Soccer hits the road for its next two at Akron Thursday (Oct. 9, 6:30 p.m. ET) and at Buffalo (Oct. 12, 1 p.m. ET). The Chippewas return for their breast cancer awareness contest against Kent State the following Thursday (Oct. 16, 7 p.m. ET).
