Muell Records Stellar Night as Volleyball Drops Five-Set Thriller to Miami (OH)

Setter Keelyn Muell charted a team-leading eight blocks against the RedHawks on Friday night.
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan Volleyball dropped a hard-fought battle with Miami (OH) on Friday night in a five-set match.
CMU moves to 9-18 on the season, 6-9 in MAC play, while Miami (OH) shifts to 14-13 overall and 8-7 in the conference.
The two teams will battle again on Saturday afternoon in McGuirk Arena as the team celebrates the six graduating seniors. First serve is set for 4 p.m.
In the first set, the two teams set the tone for the contest it was slated to be. The set went in favor of the Chippewas by a score 33-31. There were 14 times where the score was tied and three lead changes in the first set.
CMU hit .302 to start the match, killing 22 balls in the first. Alina Anderson, the senior libero for Central Michigan had charted 10 digs before the second set even began. Anderson ended the game with 16 digs, one short of a career high, but a career high in a four-set match.
Head Coach Arielle Wilson called a timeout with a two-point lead, at 17-15. The RedHawks answered out of the timeout three points in a row to take the 18-17 lead. The Chippewas led 24-22 and the two teams traded set points after the tie at 25.
In the second set, the Chippewas dipped to a .121 hitting percentage, led by Natalia Rejment and Abby Olin each charted three kills. CMU did not trail by more than three in the set until 18-23 in favor of the RedHawks. Central Michigan dropped set two, 21-25.
Central Michigan dropped the third set, 23-25, keeping the game interesting. Abby Olin killed five balls in the set, and the Chippewas blocked three balls, two coming off the hands of Brooklyn Conner. Set three was tied 10 times, and the lead changed four times.
The fourth set was a 25-21 victory for Central Michigan to force the fifth, in full team effort fashion. CMU hit .214 and held as much as a 12-5 lead. The set was ended by a block from Grace Thomas and Keelyn Muell. Natalia Rejment led the offensive charge in the set with four kills, Izzy Swiercz who entered as a sub charted six digs and a service ace.
In the fifth set, the match was summed up in a short version. Back and forth, hard fought and a battle to get the heart racing.
Central Michigan held the lead at the eight-point mark as the teams switch sides. Prior to that, Central Michigan trailed by as much as 3-6, but rallied back to tie the set at eight. There were ties at eight, nine, 11 and 12 in the set, before the RedHawks took the 12-15 victory after back-to-back attack errors by the Chippewas.
Keelyn Muell was the star of the show for the Chippewas in the thriller, leading the team with eight blocks, recording four kills and no errors, 53 assists, two aces, and digging nine balls.
Natalia Rejment charted a double-double with 10 kills and 15 digs, Taylor Cripe did as well with 13 kills and a career high 24 digs.
The Chippewas tallied eight service aces on the night, 13 blocks, and hit .223 as a team.
