Solid Start for Women's Golf at Rio Verde

Zanatta's 1-over 73 leads Chippewas, who are tied for 7th in 21-team field
RIO VERDE, Ariz. – A solid start for the Central Michigan women's golf team.
Ella Zanatta shot a 1-over par 73 on Friday and the Chippewas posted a 299 team score during the opening round of the Rio Verde Collegiate at Rio Verde Country Club.
The 299 ranks as the Chippewas' second best score of the 2024-25 season behind the 297 they posted in September during the second round of the Penn State Nittany Lion Invitational.
Round two of the 54-hole, three-day Rio Verde is set for Saturday (noon ET, 10 a.m. MT) and the final round is slated for Sunday.
The Chippewas are tied for seventh in the 21-team field. They trail first-place California Baptist by 16 shots and are just three back of fifth-place Ohio. The field includes six Mid-American Conference schools. The Chippewas are third among their league brethren; they trail the Bobcats and Ball State and are ahead of Bowling Green, Western Michigan and Akron.
Zanatta led a solid showing by the Chippewas as freshman Lauren Davis shot a 2-over 74, Hailey Katona posted a 3-over 75, Rachel Niskanen shot 77, and Brooke Morris carded an 84.
Zanatta is tied for 12th in the 104-player field, while Davis is tied for 24th, Katona is tied for 36th, and Niskanen is tied for 54th.
The 74 by Davis was a career low, while the scores by Zanatta and Katona were just two shots off their respective career bests.
Zanatta's round included a pair of birdies along with 14 pars. Her 14 pars tie her for seventh best in the field.
Pusanisa Ekkantrong of California Baptist fired a 4-under 68 on Friday for a one-shot lead over teammate Burberry Zhang.
