Track and Field Wraps Regular Indoor Slate at Michigan; Paupore, Newcombe to Compete at Notre Dame Saturday

Chippewas see 10 PRs in regular indoor finale
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — One last tune-up for Central Michigan before Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships.
The Chippewa track and field squad spent their Friday evening at Michigan's SIlverston Invitational in Ann Arbor, capitalizing on one more opportunity to compete ahead of MAC Indoor Championships in Ypsilanti on Feb. 28 and March 1. Official entries into the championships are set to be finalized by the conference and announced in the following week.
Nine CMU student-athletes had personal-best performances, including freshman Dior Newson, who ran personal-bests in the 60m and 200m, and freshmen Alexandra Cinzori and Claire Adams who both tied their career-high marks of 3.40 in the pole vault.
All four Chippewa sprinters qualified for the 60m finals, finishing right in a row in the preliminaries. Kaitlynn Rush finished 2nd in the finals with a time of 7.59; Sky Austin was 5th, Newson 6th and Mireya Benjamin 7th. The four additionally competed in the 200m, where Rush was 5th, Austin 8th, Newson 9th and Benjamin 12th.
Freshman Danica Shamion and sophomore Sophia Garland both ran personal bests in the 400m, with Shamion placing 2nd and Garland 4th in the event. Robyn Watts, a sophomore, finished in 5th.
Jada Pride, also a freshman, ran a personal-best 9.38 to place 10th in the 60-meter hurdles preliminaries.
The Chippewas fielded five entries to the 800m, with Chesney Wilke leading the pack in 6th place. Lois Creasey, a freshman, finished 10th in personal-best fashion. Libby Munderloh, Lexi Hurst and Amelia Gouin were 17th, 21st and 28th, respectively.
Olivia East placed 4th of 16 runners in the mile with a time of 5:05.54.
Freshmen Nikki Carothers, Miranda McNeil and Logan Brazee all ran career marks in the 3000m, with Carothers finishing 5th, McNeil 6th, and Brazee 7th in the race.
Alongside Cinzori and Adams in the field events were Hailey Hill, who placed 12th in the long jump and Ereka Risner, who finished 7th in shot put, as well as Kendell Wilcox, who achieved a personal-best mark of 1.58m in the high jump.
CMU seniors Emily Paupore and Natalie Newcombe will look to improve on their top marks one more time prior to next week's MAC Championships; the pair are scheduled to race in the mile on Saturday at Notre Dame's Alex Wilson Invitational. The women's mile is slated for a 2 p.m. start time.
