Softball Opens MAC Play with Two Losses to NIU

Central Michigan dropped the first two games of Mid-American Conference play in DeKalb to the Huskies.
DEKALB, Ill. – Not the start CMU Softball was looking for in the opening slate of conference play – but not something the team cannot come back from.
The Chippewas dropped two games against the Northern Illinois Huskies, 2-5 and 2-6 on Friday afternoon and will close the series out on Saturday at 2 p.m. (ET). CMU moves to 7-15 on the season as NIU moves to 7-12.
In the first game, CMU struck first in the top of the second inning with an RBI double from Rachel Cairo that scored Grace Koenig.
Northern Illinois answered with three runs in the bottom of the third inning.
NIU added another run in the fourth and the fifth, and CMU had a comeback effort with a sacrifice fly from Maddie Springer in the top of the seventh to score Keira Tolmie.
Madelyn Wallace took the start for CMU and threw four complete innings before being relieved by Cierra Laska.
Grace Koenig and Rachel Cairo each charted two hits in the game, combining for four of the teams' six.
In game two, CMU allowed a run in the bottom of the first inning after a lead-off triple for the Huskies.
Central Michigan tied the game in the third inning at one when London Williams doubled and Tori Briggs crossed the plate.
NIU charted a run in the fourth and fifth inning again, and capped the game off with a three-run sixth inning.
CMU scored it's second run of the game in the sixth inning with an RBI double from Allyssa Hollo.
In the first game of the day, Maddie Springer charted her 150th career start in the Maroon & Gold, and Allyssa Hollo charted her 150th game played for Central Michigan in the second game.
