Chippewas return home to face Davenport on Tuesday in nonconference game

AKRON, Ohio – Akron scored five runs on three hits in the bottom of the ninth inning on Sunday in coming from behind to hand Central Michigan a 7-6 loss in the finale of a three-game Mid-American Conference baseball series at the Zips' Skeeles Field.

The Chippewas took the first two games of the series and return home to Theunissen Stadium on Tuesday, April 15 for a 3 p.m. nonconference game with Davenport and then entertain Miami (Ohio) in a three-game MAC series beginning on Thursday, April 17.

The Chippewas (14-22, 7-8 MAC) appeared in to be in good position to notch their first MAC series sweep since they took three at Northern Illinois three weeks ago.

They led 6-2 with one out and none on in the bottom of the ninth when the Zips got a ground-rule double, a hit batter, and a walk to load the bases.

A single and a bases-loaded walk cut CMU's lead to 6-4, and then Charlie Schebler smacked a three-run double up the right-center field gap to give Akron the walk-off win.

Liam Stumpf (1-5) who started the ninth inning for the Chippewas, took the loss.

The loss spoiled a solid start by Jared Hanson and Cole Prout's big day at the plate.

Hanson went six innings, allowing two runs on eight hits. He left with a 6-2 lead.

Prout homered twice, becoming just the second Chippewa this season to homer twice in a game after Bryson Webb accomplished the feat against Grace Christian on March 25.

Brady Krzciok also homered for CMU, which posted its first multi-homer game since that 26-1 win over Grace Christian.

Prout's first homer, a fourth-inning solo shot, ended a streak of 16 consecutive games since his last round-tripper (March 14 at Ohio).

Krzciok's homer, which came in the sixth, was his first as a Chippewa; Prout followed immediately with his team-high seventh of the season, extending the Chippewas' lead to 6-1.
