Jozy Allen’s third defensive selection, Alexa Martel’s second goalkeeper nod; Chippewas host Butler Wednesday for home finale
CLEVELAND — Seniors Jozy Allen (Cincinnati, Ohio / Sycamore) and Alexa Martel (Rochester, N.Y. / Greece Olympia) were named the Mid-American Conference Defensive Player and Goalkeeper of the Week, respectively, Tuesday afternoon.
Â
Allen's third selection of the season came as she collected 11 draw controls on the week to claim the program's single-season record with two regular-season games remaining. She also posted four caused turnovers, six ground balls in a week that featured a third league victory and a visit to Saint Francis.
Â
Martel's second laurel of the season was earned through a season-best 65.2 percent save percentage and 15 stops in the victory against the Penguins on Sunday, after 14 saves tallied at the Red Flash last Monday. Her efficient week has her on the doorstep of eclipsing a .500 save rate for the season, as she already claimed each of the top three seasons in program history in total saves in each of her three full-time seasons in-cage.
Â
Central Michigan continued its rebound from a slow start to league play, now on a three-game streak that features victories over MAC contenders, Eastern Michigan (March 30) and Robert Morris (April 5)—key results that keep the Chippewas in the hunt for their third regular season title in four years, in the thick of the MAC Championship tournament field.
Â
CMU Lacrosse hosts Butler Wednesday (1 p.m. ET) for the regular-season home finale then, by virtue of its league bye week, has 11 days to prepare for a pivotal conference showdown with Detroit Mercy (April 27, 3 p.m. ET).
