Paupore Shatters Steeple Record; Chippewas Open Weekend at Indiana State

Emily Paupore places 4th in nationally competitve steeplechase invite, ranked 12th nationally
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.. — Emily Paupore of Central Michigan Track and Field ran the fastest 3000m steeplechase in school history on Friday at the Wake Forest Invitational, highlighting a Friday full of action between Wake Forest and Indiana State's Gibson Invitational. 
 
Paupore placed 4th in the nationally-competitive race with a finishing time of 9:56.45, which ranks her 12th in the NCAA and 1st in the Mid-American Conference. The Negaunee, Mich. senior is the only MAC runner to run a sub-ten minute race so far in the 2025 outdoor season.
 
Natalie Newcombe joined Paupore in Winston-Salem, racing in the 1500m invite on Friday evening. The Mecosta, Mich. senior finished 46th in her race.
 
The rest of the Chippewas opened weekend competition in Terre Haute, Ind., at Indiana State's Gibson Invitational.
Emma Netzel and Nikki Carothers finished in the top-five in the 3000S, finishing 2nd and 4th, respectively. Carothers, a freshman, ran a personal-best.
Kate Jenkins, Logan Brazee and Miranda McNeil competed in the 5000m, finishing 10th, 23rd and 25th, respectively.
Gracie Merrick competed in the discus throw and placed 4th with a mark of 40.62m. The sophomore will compete on Saturday in the hammer throw.
CMU Men's Cross Country's Ethan Leitner competed in the 5000m, finishing 3rd with a time of 14:59.16.
The Chippewas will continue competition in Terre Haute on Saturday, with entries in the 100m, 100mH, 200m, 400m, 400mH, men's and women's 800m, men's and women's 1500m, hammer throw, high jump, pole vault, shot put and 4x100 and 4x400 relays.
