Chippewa Bats Go Cold in 4-0 Loss to Kent State

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Jacob Bean and two relievers combined to hold Central Michigan to five hits on Saturday as Kent State topped the Chippewas, 4-0, in a Mid-American Conference baseball game on Keilitz Field at Theunissen Stadium.
It was the Golden Flashes' second straight win in the three-game series. The teams conclude the series on Sunday (1 p.m.) at Theunissen.
It was CMU's fifth straight MAC loss as the Chippewas slipped to 11-20, 5-6 MAC. Kent State improved to 18-11, 9-2.
CMU starter A.J. Kostic (0-4) turned in his best performance as a Chippewa, surrendering just two runs on five hits over seven innings, his longest outing of the season. The redshirt junior right-hander struck out two and walked three in throwing 100 pitches.
Kent State got a two-run double from Alejandro Covas in the second inning in seizing the lead. The Golden Flashes, who finished with seven hits, tacked on two runs in the eighth off reliever Justin Morgan.
Cole Prout, batting leadoff for the first time this season, led CMU with two hits while Brady Krzciok and Bryson Webb each doubled.
Bean struck out seven and allowed three hits over seven innings. Peyton Cariaco came on with two on and two out in the eighth and got a strikeout to end the threat. He then set the Chippewas down in order in the ninth for the save.
