COLUMBIA, Mo. – Central Michigan men's golf traveled to the Club at Olde Hawthorne for the opening day of the Tiger Invitational, hosted by Missouri on Monday. The 18-team, 99-man field got a late start after a short frost delay, preventing the completion of the second round.
Tuesday will begin with the completion of round two before moving on to the third and final round of the tournament.
The Chippewas shot 312 as a team in round one and head into Tuesday sitting in 18th place.
"I saw some good stretches and good competitive things going on, we just want to build on that a little more," CMU Head Coach Kevin Jennings said of the team's performance, "We want to be a little more resilient towards maintaining that competitive edge and bring home a good number, we want to continue to evolve with what we're doing. I saw a lot of good things from a bunch of the guys today, we just have to minimize mistakes and capitalize on opportunities. If we do that, I'm confident we'll get better."
Junior Easton Phillips led the Chippewas in round one, logging 76 (+6) to tie for 67th place. Phillips finished 12 holes in the second round and will start day two on hole eight, a 334-yard par four.
Keith Hunter and Nicholas Kilgore fell behind Phillips by two strokes after round one, each charting 78 (+8), tying for 82nd in the field. Hunter begins Tuesday on hole six, a 662-yard par five, while Kilgore starts his day on the same hole as Phillips.
Jeffrey Sager and Jeffrey Andrus each totaled 80 (+10) and held a tie for 94th after the first 18. Sager will stroll to the fifth hole, a 393-yard par four, while Andrus will make his way to hole seven, a 258-yard par three.
Facing difficult competition, the University of Las Vegas led the field after round one, totaling 282 (+2) as a team, while Missouri followed one stroke behind at 283 (+3).
"The event involves a few teams that will be involved in postseason play, off the top of my head I can think of three to five teams," Jennings said of the competition as CMU prepares for the Mid-American Conference Tournament at the end of April, "It's good for us to have that experience and to be amongst and competing against teams like that because that's the type of program we want to continue to build, one that is competitive."
The Chippewas aim to begin play Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. EST, weather permitting, to wrap up play at the Tiger Invitational.
