DUBLIN, Ohio – A strong second round lifted the Central Michigan men's golf team into a tie for eighth place on Monday in the 36-hole Muirfield Shootout at famed Muirfield Village.
The Chippewas posted a second-round 297 team score to finish with a 601 total. CMU, which opened with a 304, tied for eighth place with fellow Mid-American Conference member Ohio in the 13-team event.
"The first round was a little rough, a little choppy, however in the second round I saw a lot more resilience and good energy and we moved in the direction we want to move, which is up the leaderboard," CMU coach Kevin Jennings said.
It was an encouraging finish in a strong event at the site of The Memorial, one of the PGA Tour's premier events hosted by legendary Jack Nicklaus.
The field included six MAC squads including Kent State, which won the tournament with a 579 total, one better than Michigan State, Eastern Michigan and host Miami (Ohio), which tied for second.
The Chippewas will next compete in the MAC Championship May 3-5 at The Club at Holliday Farms in Zionsville, Ind. On Monday, the Chippewas finished tied with or ahead of four teams that entered Monday's Shootout ranked higher than CMU.
"Resiliency and perseverance are traits in athletics that will allow you to go a long way and I saw a little bit more of that today and at the same time, I saw some opportunities where we can improve on some things going into the MAC Championship," Jennings said. "We're very excited about the opportunity to do so."
Philippe Yturralde led the Chippewas with a 4-over par 148 total (73-75) as he tied for 21st in the 81-player field.
CMU's Hudson Vedder finished T27 at 5-over 149 (76-73), while Aydan Downer finished at 10-over 154 (81-73) and tied for 49th.
Also for the Chippewas, Keith Hunter finished at 11-over 155 (76-79), Jeffrey Andrus Jr. finished at 12-over 156 (80-76), and Jeffrey Sager finished at 17-over 161 (79-82). Hunter finished T57, Andrus finished T61, and Sager finished 73rd.
The Chippewas were tied for 11th after their first-round 304 and they improved by three spots in the second round.
"They used their resiliency and tapped into their skills and it's great to see, especially because we were able to knock down and/or catch a couple of our conference rivals (in the second round)," Jennings said.
Charlie Box of Eastern Michigan Liam Nelson of Miami both finished at 3-under 141 to share medalist honors.
