Sager leads Chippewas through final day in Columbia
COLUMBIA, Mo. – Chippewa men's golf finished their second and third rounds of the Tiger Invitational hosted by Missouri at The Club At Old Hawthorn, Tuesday in sunny and calm conditions. Round two was suspended for darkness due to a frost delay pushing back Monday's round one start.
Jeffrey Sager led CMU in the 18-team, 99-man field over the second and final day of the tournament. Sager carded 76 (+6) and 75 (+5) in rounds two and three, respectively. Monday's 80 (+10) performance clocks him at 231 on the tournament, putting the sophomore in a three-way tie for 87th place.
Keith Hunter finished one stroke behind Sager at 232 for 90th place in the tournament after finishing with 78 (+8) in his second round and 76 (+6) in his third.
Easton Phillips tallied a 235 total for 93rd place, with second and third-round totals of 83 (+13) and 76 (+6), respectively.
Nicholas Kilgore and Jeffrey Andrus each finished the Tiger Invitational at 238, tying for 94th. Kilgore finished round two at 82 (+12) and round three at 78 (+8), while Andrus clocked a 79 (+9) in each of Tuesday's rounds.
"I saw a little more resiliency again, and a little more competitive spirit, which is a little bit of what I saw when we were in DeKalb." CMU Head Coach Kevin Jennings said of his team's performance, "Having them visit that particular area of their competitive spirit is very advantageous."
As a team, the Chippewas finished round two with 315 and round three with 305. Their 312 round one score brings the team total to 932, for an 18th place finish.
CMU faced stiff competition as host Missouri finished as a team at the top of the leaderboard meeting par as a team with an 840 score. St. Mary's (CA) followed the Tigers eight strokes behind for second place.
"Learning that we can hang out with these teams that are more established than us and learning what they're doing to continue to elevate and improve their status and their program so that we know what to do to continue elevate ours."
Next on the schedule for Chippewa men's golf is the opening round of the Mid-American Conference, teeing off on April 17th in Grove City, Ohio at the Pinnacle Country Club.
