Baseball Falls into Seventh-Place Tie After Series-Opening Loss at Toledo

Game two of the series is Friday (3 p.m.) and the finale is Saturday (1 p.m.).
The Chippewas dropped to 20-33, 11-17 MAC. They are in a seventh-place tie with Western Michigan. Eastern Michigan, 12-16 MAC, defeated Kent State, 12-11, on Thursday to take sole possession of sixth place, while Western (11-17) fell to Ohio, 11-9.
The top six teams in the conference earn a berth in the MAC Tournament next week in Avon, Ohio.
With the win, Toledo (26-27, 15-13) clinched a tournament berth.
The Rockets collected 18 hits including seven home runs in rolling past the Chippewas on Thursday. They scored five runs in the second inning and six in the third in building an 11-0 lead.
Zach Knowlton had two hits, including a two-run double, to lead the Chippewas at the plate. Rees Campanale and Greg Guzik II also singled for CMU.
Chippewa starter Nate Ross (2-2) allowed five runs on three hits and walked two over 1 1/3 innings. Alejandro Espinoza, Max Hammond, Carter Campau, Jack Bach and Jack Otis pitched in relief.
