Five tight ends return who have seen action for the Chippewas in DeCorion Temple, Jacob Kaminski, Rory Callahan, Nathan VanTimmeren, and Travis Ambrose.
MOUNT PLEASANT—Central Michigan's tight ends room is filled with talent, potential, and depth. The Chippewas return five players who saw action in 2024: DeCorion Temple, Jacob Kaminski, Rory Callahan, Nathan VanTimmeren, and Travis Ambrose, along with a host of new and talented players.
In addition, Central Michigan has added a new position to the team: halfback.
Co-Offensive Coordinator/Tight Ends Coach Derek Fulton is excited about the depth and talent his room brings to the team.
"First and foremost, it's a great group of young men," Fulton said. "It's a very competitive group that pushes each other every day in the run and pass game and in everything that they do. They are unbelievable teammates, they have each other's backs, they push each other hard, they're very competitive, but they're always there for each other. They're all improving as players, you see guys improving in their weaknesses. A lot of credit goes to Coach Riedel and what his staff has done with our guys in the weight room. I've noticed a big difference in our guys physically since we arrived here."
"Henry Dryden transferred to us from South Dakota School of Mines, extremely smart kid, engineering, and he translates that to the field. Another great teammate that's willing to do whatever we ask him to do. DeCorion Temple has made tremendous improvements since we got here in January, really that's because of him. His mindset has been awesome. He has big goals for himself and his actions have followed that. He works hard in everything he does and he's gotten a lot stronger in the weight room which helps him on the football field. Jacob Kaminski is one of those guys who we ask to set the tone on the line of scrimmage. He's a big body that can move people vertically. He's done a good job of that. Rory Callahan, is similar. Rory is very capable of moving people, really strong kid, we're excited about him and what the future holds for him.
"Nathan VanTimmeren is extremely competitive kid who wants to do the right thing every time. He's very competitive and a physical player. He complements guys really well because of his flexibility in the run and pass game. Travis Ambrose is similar to these other guys, big body and capable of moving people and has made some improvements. I forget sometimes that he's so young. He's continued to grow and we're excited about him. Logan Borodychuk moved to tight end from quarterback. He's very eager to keep improving. He's attacked it with everything he does. JJ Douglas is very talented and gifted as an athlete. He doesn't have a lot of experience playing tight end, but he's learning, he's getting better. He made some of the biggest improvements in the weight room as anyone on team. You can see that the field, he's not afraid to be physical."
"Rusty VanWetzinga transferred to us from Iowa. He comes from a very physical program. His dad is one of the best high school coaches in the state of Iowa. He was a very physical player back in his day and that is where he gets it from. McKeegan Ferguson switched over from linebacker for us. He brings that physical mindset as well. Both of those guys are doing a tremendous job."
