The Chippewas came out of half time on fire, but could not push one across the end line against the Bearcats
CINCINNATI — A flurry out of the gates in the second half, adjustments took hold. Despite five on-target tries in the second half, Central Michigan Soccer fell at Cincinnati Thursday night.
The Chippewas had two key set pieces in the first 15 minutes of the second frame, both led to close-call saves off the head of freshman defender Abby Freese (Dillsburg, Pa. / Northern), one of which carried across the face of the goal in the 56th minute, needing multiple back line Bearcat defenders to clear it away.
Junior Melaina Troy (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) responded to CMU's slow first half offensively with a bold strike less than two minutes after the break. Troy, who had started in the midfield to this point, was a member of the front line in Cincinnati.
Five Chippewas combined for six on-target attempts in total, five in the second half.
Brylee Borgman (Norton Shores, Mich. / Mona Shores) reclaimed her place in-goal, with multiple heads-up plays throughout the contest, the first of which was a point-blank attempt inside the 6' where the rebound strike was called off for an offside Bearcat. She finished with six saves.
Cincinnati found its winner in the 66th minute. A low line-drive attempt from outside the 18' was tucked just inside the opposite post. Borgman was forced to maintain her initial position in the middle of the face of the goal, shaded to her left post, as a Bearcat striker stood right in the path of the ball, stepped away just in time for the ball to find its way in, leaving no time for Borgman to react.
Central Michigan Soccer gets a 10-day hiatus to regroup before a westward trip to South Dakota (Sept. 7, Noon ET). The Chippewas return home to host Wright State (Sept. 11) before the Mid-American Conference slate begins in Mount Pleasant against Ohio (Sept. 14).
