Chippewas Late Push Comes Up Short Against Owls
8/31/2025 2:44:00 PM | Field Hockey
Mallory Camryn records her first hat trick as a Chippewa, Ashley Cogger saves nine shots in Temple homecoming
Senior forward Mallory Camryn held an offensive masterclass, scoring on all three shot attempts for her first hat trick in the Maroon and Gold. All three of Camryn's goals came quickly following corners, as a team Temple conceded six corners throughout the match.
Temple's whistle trouble began early. Within the first two minutes, the Chippewas put together a strong push and drew a penalty from an Owls defender. The penalty led to CMU's first penalty stroke of the year, and was awarded to senior Amelia Lane, who had an impressive attempt knocked down.
In her homecoming game, graduate goalkeeper transfer from Temple, Ashley Cogger, was able to stop all three shots sent her way in the first 15, on top of orchestrating the Chippewa defense to stop four penalty corner attempts.
Temple quickly put on pressure in the second quarter, putting up eight shots on goal, and earning three corners. The Owls were able to capitalize on two shots, the first in the 26th minute coming from chaos after a corner attempt. The second came in the 27th minute from a break away by Owls forward Lucia Magro.
By halftime Cogger's day in the cage concluded, as she was swapped with sophomore keeper Jenna Billig. Cogger ended the day with nine total saves, and allowed two goals.
The Chippewas regained their offensive stride midway through the third quarter. Camryn found the back of the cage with a well-designed play off a penalty corner in the 38th minute. After freshman Mora Rulli inserted to Hailey Bainer, Bainer and Camryn exchanged passes, ending with Camryn taking an open shot on the Owls keeper, cracking the Chippewas side of the board. The goal was Camryn's first of the season, 11th as a Chippewa, and was Bainer's first assist of the season.
The Owls remained tame in the final half of the third quarter before, converting their third goal in the 47th minute.
Camryn, CMU's leading scorer in 2024, struck twice in a five-minute span to pull the Chippewas even with the Owls late. She converted her first off Rulli's shot following a penalty corner, flicking it over Temple's keeper, who was still on the turf. Camryn's second was set up identically to her first goal of the game, with two main differences: Lane inserting the corner, and instead of scoring on her initial shot Camryn collected the rebound and lifted it over the diving Owls' keeper.
The game deciding goal came less than two minutes later as the Owls' Riley Gallagher was able to score with just over a minute remaining on the clock, shortly following a penalty corner.
Billig posted an identical line to Cogger, recording 30 minutes, nine saves, and allowed two goals.
Alongside Camryn's offensive showcase, Carolena Ryon placed heavy pressure on the Owls' keeper. Ryon put up five shots, four of them on goal.
As a team the Chippewas recorded 13 shots, with 10 landing on goal, the most since Central Michigan put 12 on goal last season against Bellarmine (Oct. 4).
The Chippewas will be back in action Friday, Sept. 5 in their home opener against Mercyhurst.
