Field Hockey Falls in Overtime in Season Opener

Davis, Calif. – Central Michigan Field Hockey fell 2-1 in extra time in a defensive battle Friday at California Davis to open the 2026 season.
Carolena Ryon scored the lone goal for the Chippewas on an odd-man rush after being teed up in the center of the pitch by fellow forward Cameron Pluciennik. The goal came just a minute and a half into the third quarter after the Chippewas fell behind at the buzzer of the first half.
As a team, the Chippewas recorded seven shots, five landing on goal, and drew three corner attempts. UC Davis matched the Chippewas in shots and shots on target but held an advantage of one in corner attempts.
"I was pleased with how we controlled possession and how we responded throughout the game." First-year Chippewa Head Coach Kelly Terwilliger said of the day's effort, "There's a lot for us to build on, and we're excited to get back out there."
Davis recorded the first goal of the game on a successful corner attempt with just seconds to go in the first half and logged the winner just over a minute into overtime.
Jenna Billig made the start in goal, recording two saves in her 2026 debut.
Freshmen Lotte Jacobs and AJ Walker each found a spot in Terwilliger's first lineup card to kick off their careers in Maroon and Gold. Fellow freshmen Ava Walters and Juanna Galli, alongside sophomore transfer Madeline Wagner, found playing time off the bench.
The Chippewas return to action Sunday, Aug. 30, at 4 p.m. ET, 1 p.m. PT to take on California before rounding out their season-opening California trip at Stanford Monday, Aug. 31, at 3 p.m. ET, Noon PT.
