Camryn nets both Chippewa goals, leads team with six
Mount Pleasant, Mich. — Central Michigan's field hockey team beat Mercyhurst Sunday 2-1, completing a two-game sweep over the Lakers at Cristy Freese Field, outscoring them on the weekend 6-1.
The weekend's back-to-back wins at home mark the first time the Chippewas achieved the feat since 2019's opening weekend when CMU defeated Colgate 4-1 (Aug. 30) and Saint Louis 3-0 (Sept. 2).
Senior Mallory Camryn scored both Chippewa goals, each unassisted. Graduate student Ashley Cogger stood tall in net, facing seven Lakers shots, four landing on target to collect three saves.
Camryn put the Chippewas on the board in the 11th minute, after being rewarded with a penalty stroke. Camryn swept it low between the legs of Laker's keeper Louise Pert, for her fifth goal of the season.
The Chippewa offense added five additional shots and drew four penalty corners through the first 15. On the other side of the field, CMU's defense held Mercyhurst to no shots or corners.
In the 19th minute Mercyhurst was able to find the board, squeezing a shot past Cogger, the only one she would allow over the two-game set.
The Chippewa offense maintained pressure in the Lakers' end to wrap up the first half, putting up seven shots, six landing on goal.
"Having a sense of urgency," CMU Head Coach Jennifer Johnstone preached to the team over halftime, "taking quick restarts, making sure we're playing options that are on and available, making sure our feet were pointing towards the cage so we can get some shots and finish around their keeper."
After a quiet third, highlighted by unsuccessful offensive pushes by both teams, Camryn was able to put away the game winner in the 47th minute. Set up by a rebound off a penalty corner, Camryn was able to collect a loose ball down low, flip her stick, and lift a backhanded shot over the Lakers keeper.
The defense held strong in the fourth, giving up no shots, and helped maintain pressure in the Chippewas offensive zone.
As a team CMU put up 24 shots, nine landing on goal, and generated 11 penalty corners.
"We've got a lot to learn in terms of how to manage the game when we're up instead of down. Which is something I think we're learning because we're not usually in this position. So, we'll watch some film. We'll learn from that. We'll grow. We're happy to be 500 heading into Colgate and heading to New York, but we definitely have a lot of room to grow."
With four points on the day Camryn now sits six points away from 100 on her career. She would be the fifth Chippewa to reach the mark, and the first since Kelly Jordan in 2008.
Central Michigan will head to Colgate Friday, Sept. 12, looking for three victories in a row.
