Billig saves seven, Pluciennick scores amidst defensive battle
PALO ALTO, Calif. – Central Michigan Field Hockey fell 2-1 to Stanford in the final of their three-game California road trip.
The Chippewas fell into a hole early, with the Cardinal putting a shot into the net just two minutes into the game. Just a few moments later, Sophomore Mora Rulli found Senior Cameron Pluciennik running alone behind the Stanford defense, who tied the game up at one apiece.
From there, it was a standstill, with no goals being surrendered for another 40 minutes of game time.
Junior Goalkeeper Jenna Billig had an outstanding performance in goal, facing 19 total shots, nine of which were on goal. Billig totaled 17 total saves over the three-game trip.
The Chippewas defense had yet another fantastic showing, forcing multiple Stanford turnovers and off-target shots.
As a team, the Chippewas had 10 total shots, eight of which were on target and six penalty corners, all of which were team season highs. Senior Hailey Bainer aided the Chippewas' offensive effort, peppering in three shots, all of which went on target. This was Bainer's second time in her career with three or more shots on goal in a game. Sophomore Mora Rulli, who along with her assist, totaled four shots with three falling on target. This was her fourth time in her Chippewa career with three or more shots on goal.
The Chippewas travel to Bloomington, Ind. for a two-game stand against New Hampshire on Sept. 6, and Indiana on Labor Day, Sept. 7.
