Chippewas Fall to Billikens 2-1 in Overtime after Defensive Battle

Billig earns six saves in opening half, Chippewas log 20 shots
SAINT LOUIS – Central Michigan Field Hockey closed out its non-conference schedule with a 2-1 overtime loss to Saint Louis to split the home-and-home series.
A defensive battle through the first 45 minutes relented to a two-goal fourth quarter, highlighted by a late goal by junior forward Carolena Ryon to tie the game with just over two minutes remaining and force overtime. The Chippewas held the advantage in on-target shots and corners by the final whistle.
The scoreless first half was highlighted by six saves by junior keeper Jenna Billig, who recorded a shutout in the Chippewas last matchup against Longwood. In all, she faced seven Billikens shots, six of which were on target.
Central Michigan recorded eight shots, three on target, and drew three penalty corners in the first 30 minutes. Sophomore Mora Rulli led the Chippewas with three shots going into the break. Teah Savignano, Molly Claus and Ryon were responsible for all on-target Chippewa shots in the first half.
The second half started hot for the Chippewas, who earned a penalty corner and just barely missed finding the scoreboard on a deflected shot by senior Hailey Bainer.
SLU beat freshman keeper Judith Van Aartsen, who relieved Billig at halftime, with just under 10 minutes remaining in regulation to break the scoreless tie.
With slightly over four minutes to go, the Chippewas pulled Van Aartsen to gain an extra attacker. The gamble paid off just two minutes later, when Savignano led an odd-man rush, tried to pass low to senior Cameron Pluciennik on the keeper's right side, only for the SLU keeper to intercept. Ryon was positioned perfectly, collected the rebound, and buried it from the edge of the circle to tie the game and force overtime.
Jenna Billig returned to the cage to kick off overtime. The Chippewas recorded three shots in the extra period before a successful penalty corner by the Billikens 12 minutes into the extra frame to seal the game.
Ryon, Rulli, Bri Eckenroth, Bainer and Savignano each logged multiple shots, spearheaded by Ryon with five of her own.
