Van Aartsen makes first career start in Chippewas final road game, Cotroneo notches third goal on the season.
HARRISONBURG, Va. – Central Michigan Field Hockey was defeated 3-1 Sunday afternoon by James Madison to close out its 2026 road slate.
James Madison drove down the field quickly and earned a penalty shot less than a minute into the match. Freshman keeper Judith Van Aartsen, in her first career start, made a stick save on the attempt to keep the score level early.
The Dukes went on to open the scoring in the ninth minute, after collecting a loose ball rebound on the left side of the cage.
Teah Savignano had the Chippewas first scoring chance early in the second quarter, when she collected the ball and led an odd-man rush on the Dukes' keeper. She was responsible for the Chippewas first shot of the game, which went just wide to the left. Central Michigan quickly gained their first penalty corner of the game after Cameron Pluciennik logged CMU's first on-target shot.
The Chippewas offensive pressure in the second quarter resulted in six shots, three on-target shots, and two corner attempts.
James Madison added their second goal of the game in the second minute of the second half and their third in the second minute of the fourth quarter after collecting a rebound in front of the net.
Senior Annabelle Cotroneo found the back of the cage for the Chippewas in the 53rd minute after collecting a loose ball near the top of the circle and rifling it past the keeper for her third goal of the season.
"We didn't execute consistently enough to get the result we wanted." Head Coach Kelly Terwilliger said on the day's effort, "This group continues to compete, and our responsibility is to keep raising or stardard and getting better."
Central Michigan finished the day with nine saves, 12 shots, seven shots on target and four corners.
The Chippewas will finish off their regular season in Mount Pleasant, as they take on Bellarmine Friday, Oct. 23, before facing off with No. 12 Miami Friday, Oct. 30.
