Trip to Charleston Ends with Hard Faught Loss for Softball

Softball fell to the College of Charleston 4-5 in the final game of the Charleston Invitational hosted by the Cougars.
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Central Michigan Softball is beginning to find the identity of Team 48 – and it is one full of offense, grit and tenacity.
On Sunday afternoon, the Chippewas fell 4-5 to the College of Charleston Cougars. The four runs for Central Michigan were scored in the top of the seventh inning, forcing the host team to walk the game off. Charleston walked of all four of their victories in the weekend tournament.
Mackenzie Langan (2-1) took the circle for Central Michigan, and collected her first loss of her senior season. Langan struck out six batters in the outing.
Brooklyn Compau entered in relief for CMU in the fifth inning and faced the final 12 batters.
The runs for the Chippewas came all via base hit. In the seventh, Angela Petrovitch started the inning with an infield single. Hannah Tassin, who charted her first career start as a Chippewa put a ball in play and reached on an error by the Cougars. Tassin moved to second on the error while Petrovitch moved to third.
Petrovitch scored when Emma Lotus put the ball in play. Another ball in play from Grace Koenig charted another run for Central Michigan, scored by Ashley Bila who entered as a pinch runner for Tassin.
Ella Luegge crossed the plate, as a pinch runner for Keira Tolmie after a walk, to score the third run of the inning for Central Michigan. The RBI scoring Luegge was credited to London Williams who singled through the right side of the infield.
Williams scored the tying run from first base after a double to left field, off of the wall, for Jenna Kuzara.
The efforts were valiant but fell short as the Cougars ultimately walked the game off on a fielder's choice hit to the shortstop with the bases loaded.
Overall, on the weekend, through five games, Central Michigan outscored the opponents 36-26 with 54 hits. The two victories for the Chippewas over the weekend were an eight run, run-rule victory and a seven-run decision. All three losses were by one run, with the loss to Saint John's ending in 10 innings.
Central Michigan will next head to Minnesota to participate in the tournament hosted by the Golden Gophers in USBank Stadium. The team will play the 20th-22nd of February in Minneapolis.
