Austin, Shrader Bow Out at NCAA Championships

CLEVELAND – Central Michigan wrestlers Mason Shrader and Andrew Austin were eliminated from the NCAA Championships at Rocket Arena on Thursday.
Austin, a redshirt junior wrestling at 133 pounds, went 1-2 and finished the season 21-15. Shrader, a redshirt senior wrestling at 157, went 0-2 and finished the season 24-12 and 96-45 in his career.
Austin, who was seeded 32nd, opened with an 11-3 major-decision loss to No. 33 Carter Schmidt of Oklahoma and then bounced back with a 6-5 win over No. 30 Gabe Whisenhunt of Oregon State.
Austin, a first-time NCAA qualifier, was eliminated on a 19-5 major decision by No. 16 Ethan Berginc of Army West Point.
Shrader, who was seeded 25th, opened with a 10-4 loss to Ohio State's Brandon Cannon, the No. 8 seed, and then bowed out of the tournament with a 7-1 loss to No. 24 Jaivon Jones of Little Rock.
It marked the second consecutive season that Shrader has qualified for the NCAA Championships.
The tournament, which features 333 wrestlers in 10 weight classes, continues through Friday concludes with the championship matches on Saturday night. The top eight wrestlers in each weight class earn All-America honors.
