First Day Against UMass Ends in Split for Softball

Central Michigan welcomed UMass Softball to Margo Jonker Stadium for the first time and earned a split against the Minutewomen.
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Chippewas earned a split against UMass on Saturday afternoon at Margo Jonker Stadium. CMU dropped the first game 3-5 and pulled out a 7-2 victory for the second game.
Central Michigan moves to 19-16 on the season and 10-6 in the conference while UMass shifts to 14-23 and 6-11 in the conference.
Game 1
Central Michigan struck first in the second inning with back-to-back doubles off the bats of Cierra Laska and Rachel Cairo. Alexa Carter scored on Laska's hit was later plated by Cairo.
UMass posted a run in the third inning with an RBI double and took the lead in the fourth inning with a three spot. The Minutewomen used a single and two doubles to plate their three runs.
The Chippewas brought it within one in the bottom of the fourth inning when Carter hit her seventh home run of the season to deep right center field. Carter now leads the team in that category.
UMass added another insurance run in the top of the seventh with a sacrifice fly to reach the final score of 5-3 in favor of UMass.
Mackenzie Langan took the start for Central Michigan throwing 3.2 innings, issuing four runs, one of which was earned. Aubrey Strelow entered in the fourth inning to face 12 batters, striking out five. Cierra Laska closed the game with the final three batters.
Game 2
Central Michigan erupted for five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take the 5-0 lead.
Alexa Carter starting it off with a 2-RBI double to left center, scoring Jenna Kuzara and London Williams. Then, Tori Briggs singled via bunt that scored Ella Luegge from third, as she entered to run for Carter after the double.
Rachel Cairo singled, Angela Petrovitch singled, each collecting an RBI and each.
UMass scored two in the top of the sixth inning, but CMU pulled out a 7-2 win with two more runs in response with a 2-RBI single from Cierra Laska.
Brooklyn Compau started game two for Central Michigan, throwing 5.2 innings with seven strikeouts. Laska entered to face the final three batters and secure the victory for the Chippewas.
Overall, on the day, the Chippewas combined for 19 hits across the two games and the pitching staff struck out 14 batters. Nine different Chippewas recorded hits, with Carter and Grace Koenig both with three through the two games.
The two teams will meet again on Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m. for the series finale.
